Official breaking ground and announcement ceremony for the Smart City project in the North of Hanoi

06 October 2019

Hanoi, October 6, 2019 - As part of activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day (October 10th), the joint venture between Vietnam’s BRG Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation will officially hold a breaking ground and announcement ceremony today for the Smart City project in the north of the capital

Within the planning of the Nhat Tan - Noi Bai master plan, the project is expected to represent a new symbol of vitality, provide modern and high-end living standards, and create a driver for Vietnam’s socioeconomic development into the future.
The implementation of the project also demonstrates the pioneering spirit and determination of Hanoi authorities in quickly bringing to life the Politburo’s Resolution on Industry 4.0, in which Vietnam is to have at least three smart cities in its three key economic regions - the North, the South, and the Central - by 2025.

In implementing such an important project for Vietnam such as the Smart City in Dong Anh district in Hanoi, over the years, Madame Nguyen Thi Nga, Chairwoman of the BRG Group, has remained dedicated and resolute in overcoming a host of difficulties. In early May 2009, Madame Nga recognized the need to have a leading smart city in Hanoi -“A smart city is a city for future generations,” she said.
“Today we begin construction of our Smart City, but it is not just for our generation but, more importantly, it’s to build a solid foundation for the development of future generations of Vietnamese people. In living in the Smart City, the capacity of Vietnamese people will be truly boosted, creating momentum to promote socioeconomic development quickly. My desire has always been to dedicate the best things to Hanoi, for our capital to not be cluttered by small projects and lacking in synchronized planning, but to develop into a modern city rivaling and even surpassing other developed cities.”, Madame Nguyen Thi Nga shared.

After completion of the detailed planning, the BRG Group identified partners with both the capacity and the same vision of sustainable development. The Sumitomo Corporation, one of the leading groups in Japan, officially came together with BRG to develop the Smart City project.

Located in a great position on the route directly linking the center of Hanoi and Noi Bai International Airport, the Smart City project is considered a stepping stone towards Vietnam achieving its socioeconomic development ambitions. At the same time, the Smart City will be a place that connects trade between Vietnam and other countries in the region and the world. With total estimated investment of nearly US$4.2 billion, the Smart City project will cover nearly 272 hectares and be divided into five stages that are closely intertwined.

According to the plan prepared by the BRG - Sumitomo joint venture, people living in the Smart City will enjoy the full benefits stemming from the synchronous development of modern and sustainable infrastructure, promoting Hanoi’s socioeconomic development. The project is expected to apply a number of “smart” features such as smart energy, smart transport, smart community, smart learning, smart life, smart health, and smart economics. A smart building management system and renewable energy technology will also be prioritized, to optimize energy supply and storage. The project also intends to build an environmentally-friendly public transport system, connecting the Smart City with the center of Hanoi and helping people move quickly and conveniently.

The Smart City in the northern reaches of Hanoi is community oriented, with facilities such as schools, healthcare centers, security systems, disaster prevention measures, and commercial areas, as well as green parks, canals, and a garden of sakura trees, to deliver a comfortable life to local people. It is expected that the project will install a multifunctional intelligent monitoring and warning system to monitor air quality, water, weather, disaster risks, and security in the city, ensuring maximum safety for residents. At the same time, the BRG - Sumitomo joint venture will compile a detailed plan on the application of smart technologies such as 5G, facial recognition, and blockchain, which will contribute to improvements in services in the capital. Along with a smart economy, there will be high-end, modern services that hasten trade between domestic and foreign businesses. The Smart City will be an important foundation for increasing the competitiveness of Vietnam’s economy.

The BRG - Sumitomo joint venture officially holding this breaking ground and announcement ceremony today for the Smart City project further demonstrates the friendship between Vietnam and Japan and Hanoi’s ongoing economic development over the years. It also expresses the determination of Hanoi authorities to develop on par with the most modern cities in the world.
